Nominator's rationale: WP:OCASSOC; intersection isn't defining. Qwerfjkltalk 21:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Qwerfjkl, I get your point. Maybe we can find a better naming for the category to avoid the subjective aspect of the category ("associated with")? The idea is to make a category compiling the biographies of artists that have been invited to visit CERN (in many cases within a framework of an artist-in-residence programme )to be inspired by physics to develop their art further. The laboratory have had different kind of programmes over the years. The first artist who was invited came as early as in 1972 (James Lee Byars). I am not including artists that "simply" feature CERN aspects of particle physics. However, I appreciate that a 100% clear definition can be difficult to work out. Still I believe the category can be of general interest as arts and physics is intriguing.
~~~ Bibliophilen (talk) 08:55, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bibliophilen, that still seems WP:NONDEFINING. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:03, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly not 100% definable, but still possible to document through published articles. Wikipedia hold many other categories that are far less Wikipedia:NONDEFINING, i.e. Category:Underground publishers I cannot really see how to scientifically define ...
~~~ Bibliophilen (talk) 17:14, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bibliophilen, that's WP:OTHERSTUFF. By all means, nominate it for discussion. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:34, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed a fair argument, Qwerfjkl. The category could have limited to arts@CERN-artists <https://arts.cern> (which is 100% definable), but that would in my view be too restrictive as the laboratory also invites artists outside of the framework. The point is that it is quite an interesting group of artists that have sought inspiration in physics—and CERN is promoting this—and I believe it is worth while featuring it. The category in discussion helps doing so.

Nominator's rationale: WP:OR. Although a Nordic Bishops' Conference (Conferentia Episcopals Scandiæ) exists, there is no single position called "apostolic nuncio to Scandinavia". James Green (bishop) and Pope Adrian IV were just simultaneously nuncio to several "Scandinavian/Nordic" countries, but each received their appointments to each country separately and not under a single title. The same goes for Henryk Józef Nowacki, Julio Murat, Emil Paul Tscherrig etc., who are all categorised per country and not per "Scandinavia". Only Pope Adrian IV is not categorised per country, but should be. NLeeuw (talk) 15:26, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment, I guess the intended distinction is between the federal subject and the ethnic group. Almost 2/3 of the population of the federal subject belongs to the ethnic group. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:12, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Marcocapelle Fair enough, I overlooked that. But that would mean that we would need to purge all items which are about geography and not ethnicity, such as Category:Buddhism in Kalmykia, because these Buddhists in Kalmykia aren't necessarily ethnic Kalmyks (Buddhism in Kalmykia has a few statements about Buryat buddhists in Kalmykia, for example). Parent Category:Culture of Kalmykia might not be appropriate either, because ethnic Kalmyks also live outside Kalmykia, so Kalmykia cannot define ethnic Kalmyk culture by itself. The same goes for Udmurt culture nominated above. Similarly problematic would parent Category:Culture of Russia by ethnicity then become, as it implies that however the culture of each ethnicity exists / is experienced inside Russia is WP:DEFINING, and all ethnic Fooians outside the Russian Federation apparently cannot contribute to, or do not even belong to, the ethnic Fooian culture. Restricting an ethnic culture to a territory when demographics are always dynamic seems a bad idea in the first place and probably an WP:ARBITRARYCAT. Thoughts? NLeeuw (talk) 15:43, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Considering the mixed ethnic population of many federal subjects, a tree of culture by federal subject does not seem very useful at all. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:48, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      @Marcocapelle Agreed. Then maybe I should Withdraw the Kalmyk and Udmurt culture CfMs, and instead nominate Category:Culture of Russia by ethnicity for Deletion as an WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:CROSSCAT? It might set quite a disruptive precedent, but if we want to be accurate, then anything in the Category:Culture by ethnicity tree should not be limited by geography. Nobody is in a position to claim all members of an "ethnic" group (however one may define it) live in the same geographic area, and always will (WP:CRYSTAL). Especially in our modern era of high mobility for individual human beings migrating across the planet, and constant demographic shifts, it would be inappropriate to put an ethnic culture in a geographic box. Propose merging/renaming all of the following categories listed under Category:Murdered journalists:
Nominator's rationale: To me, it just seems that all of these "Assassinated journalists" categories are completely redundant to "Murdered journalists"; it's as simple as that. And as a bonus, I also suggest that "Killed journalists by country" should be renamed for the sake of consistency with its parent category "Murdered journalists". AHI-3000 (talk) 03:56, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Completely agree that one of the two category layers is redundant. I would rather upmerge Murdered journalists though (and keep Assassinated journalists) because Murdered journalists contains murders for trivial reasons i.e. unrelated to their profession as a journalist. If there is no consensus for upmerging Murdered journalists then upmerging Assassinated journalists as nominated would be my second best choice. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:08, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural comment, the 89 subcategories should be tagged and listed too. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:10, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Tagging all 89 subcategories would be a tedious pain in the ass though. AHI-3000 (talk) 09:47, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Dislike "Murdered" (at least as a generalized category name): The word "murder" has a specific meaning. A state, police or military action to kill someone (especially by an autocratic or dictatorial state) would ordinarily not be called "murder". "Killed" is more neutral. "Assassination" is often not accurate and has undesirable connotations (e.g. that the person killed is a prominent political figure and that the killer is typically not). — BarrelProof (talk) 21:03, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep It's really not as simple as that these brave writers have been killed because of what they wrote not because of who they are. Their assassinations were as a result of their work, which created the notoriety which led them to be murdered.No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:38, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with you on that Kanatonian (talk) Kanatonian (talk) 22:38, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: As far as I understand previous consensus, being killed as a result of one's work is a defining characteristic, while being incidentally killed for unrelated reasons is a trivial cross-categorization. It was agreed sometime ago that the former group should be termed Assassinated jobbers, while Murdered jobbers categories should not exist. However, I agree that assassinated doesn't quite fit the intended scope, as it conveys that it's limited to targeted killings of prominent people, while journalists may otherwise die due to job-related reasons in other manners, such as being in a conflict zone. And still, the assumption that the two can be clearly separated is an oversimplification of reality, as there are plenty of cases where journalists are killed for unrelated or unknown reasons but the case then generates public reaction that is directly tied to their work as a journalist. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:57, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The suggested name would include people murdered by their spouses/domestic partners in domestic abuse cases, instead of being killed for their professional activities. How is that defining? Dimadick (talk) 18:29, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Castilian culture[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge as nominated. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 19:07, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per enwiki category tree, which already almost universally follows Category:Castile and León, and most other Wikipedias as well, see Wikidata Q9480802 Category:Culture of Castile and León. (Also C2C per Fooian culture to Culture of Fooland precedents.)
The only exception is Category:Castilian cinema, which is a child of Category:Leonese cinema; those could also be merged. Therefore, I also propose to rename Leonese cinema to Cinema of Castile and León (C2C parents Category:Cinema of Spain and Category:Castile and León), connect it to Wikidata Q6206699 Category:Cinema of Castile and León, and upmerge Category:Castilian cinema into it. NLeeuw (talk) 11:52, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Technical question: might it be a better idea to Rename rather than Merge the first item? Because I'm proposing to merge to a category that does not yet exist. NLeeuw (talk) 12:12, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commentary: I think I know why these categories are so oddly named and don't fit well into the category trees: someone created the Category:Castilian culture category with the idea that "Castilian" (from Castile (historical region)) still refers to three modern-day autonomous communities of Spain: Castile and León (but excluding the Region of León, which ceased to exist in 1983), Castilla–La Mancha, and the Community of Madrid. But there was already a separate Category:Madrilenian cinema, and there were already categories for Category:Actors from Castilla–La Mancha, Category:Film directors from Castilla–La Mancha‎, and Category:Films shot in Castilla–La Mancha‎. So the rest of English Wikipedia does not seem to have the concept of a "Greater Castile" sans León, or at least find it irrelevant when it comes to cinema. So I created Category:Cinema of Castilla–La Mancha as a parent to the latter three, and limited the scope of "Castilian cinema" to Castile within Castile and León, at least for now. Its own child and parent categories reflect the modern reality of the autonomous communities as well (see Category:Cinema of Spain by autonomous community). Treating "Castilian" as anything else is taking a historical-political position, and there is no reason why Wikipedia should take that position instead of the actual administrative division, especially when it comes to a subject like cinema. NLeeuw (talk) 12:45, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nederlandse Leeuw I noticed Category:Castilian music which is a sub category of Castilian culture and Music of Spain by autonomous community. Is that title correct? Gonnym (talk) 16:19, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonnym Well-spotted. I think the title Category:Castilian music is incorrect, and that category should be split in three. It shows the same problem as I described above: the word "Castilian" is trying to represent multiple autonomous communities at the same time within Category:Music of Spain by autonomous community, which is impossible, as well as WP:OR. eswiki has es:Categoría:Música de Castilla y León, es:Categoría:Música de Castilla-La Mancha, and es:Categoría:Música de la Comunidad de Madrid; so should we. (We actually do have a Music of Castile and León to serve as a main article, although it is unsourced at the moment and has no eswiki equivalent.) We've already got Category:Spanish musicians by autonomous community as well, where C y L, C-LM and Madrid are also split in three.
To not make the current discussion too complicated, I would recommend agreeing on my 4 proposals above first, and splitting Category:Castilian music as a follow-up. NLeeuw (talk) 16:47, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename/merge per nom. Hypothetically these categories could have referred to the Kingdom of Castile and the Kingdom of Leon, but that is not actually the case. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:12, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Thomas Mahler, as the co-founder of Moon Studios, is designing all of their games. Right now, Mahler is not notable when discussed outside of the context of Moon Studios. OceanHok (talk) 09:14, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Only one book in this category, upmerge for now. (The book is already in several philosophy book categories) Mason (talk) 03:54, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. This isn't helpful for navgiation to only have one page in it Mason (talk) 03:26, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom, though 1963 and up may be merged to decade categories instead of century. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:36, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Good idea. I'll add that to the nom Mason (talk) 14:52, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment Looking at Category: Swedish novels by year (the categories that inspired me to create the Danish ones), it contains just as many categories wit some sixty categories with one or two pages. Should they also be deleted or is there a difference that I don't se?Ramblersen2 (talk) 17:44, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      You are welcome to tag them @Ramblersen2. I started with the Danish ones because those were what I saw first. Tagging them is tiresome, because I tried to populate them as I went. Mason (talk) 23:31, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
